How long has your shop been open?
Since 2009, 12 years
Tell us how you got started.
In 2008, my family decided it would be a good idea for my mother to live with us. So we sold both our house and hers. Both attics, closets, and garages were full of collected items from many years, mine for about 40 and hers since 1953! Since she
was of the “keep everything” generation, we discovered many antiques and vintage treasures. In the process of trying to decide what to do with all of the things we would
not have space for in the new home, we decided to try leasing space in an antique mall to sell them. I have a good friend who was already doing this, and we thought it would
be fun to do it together. It worked, and here I am still leasing! Along the way, I began painting and refurbishing old furniture to sell in my booth. That led to adding the product line, BlackBerry House Paint, which is designed for home decor projects. I then discovered Zibra brushes and after loving them to paint my
projects, I inquired about becoming a retailer...and seven years later, here I am.
How long have you been selling Zibra brushes? What is your best selling Zibra brush?
Since 2014 (I think!). 2” Cut-in stubby, although I recently added the round stubby and it has been very popular. I personally like it a lot.
What other products do you sell?
BlackBerry House Paint/Scrubby Soap/ antique, vintage and refurbished items/ home decor items
What is 1 unique thing about your shop?
It is quite small! But I cram as much as I can in it!!
What advice do you have for someone starting out as a small business owner?
Do your research; asks lots of questions (there are no dumb questions when getting started); follow your interests and passion.
Do you have any successful merchandising tips to share?
For my antique booth, it is quite basic. It is important to rearrange your space often. Even if you have nothing new to add, just moving the same things around makes it look
different and highlights different objects. On the other hand, for the paint and brush booth area, it is important to keep things
consistent. Customers want to be able to find their items quickly.
If you weren’t a small business owner, what would you be doing for a profession?
Actually, I’ve already done that! I’m a retired elementary media specialist. Currently, I’m enjoying my retirement hobby!
